It was a bad week for Hollywood but good for the rest of us

It’s a sad commentary on the current state of affairs where if one side of the political aisle is up, very often the other side is down.

But that’s what happens when there are two diametrically-opposing worldviews.

And it was a bad week for Hollywood but good for the rest of us.

Since Hollywood is in a state of malaise, at least half of America couldn’t be happier.

Top Gun: Maverick has turned out to be a resounding success and this is largely because of the complete absence of the relentless wokeness that has insidiously crept into just about everything created in recent years.

The tedious box-checking to please every woke constituency was wholly absent and the film is a pro-American movie with men doing military stuff.

So, of course, the media whined that the film is a tribute to toxic masculinity (Is it beyond their capacity to ever see such a thing as toxic femininity?).

Some industry pundits called the exclusion of Kelly McGillis “age discrimination” and social justice warriors were none too pleased that the film was successful, and probably because of the lack of insufferable wokeness.

If that wasn’t enough, Disney once again found itself at the center of controversy and once again committed another own-goal.

After racist tweets were leveled against actress Moses Ingram from the series Obi-Wan on social media, Disney’s responded on Twitter, “We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold.  If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist. There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist.”

This was problematic because it suggested that Disney’s fan base had been infiltrated by racists.

Even leftist fans pointed out the hypocrisy of Disney’s high-minded rhetoric because when The Force Awakens opened in Communist China, Disney (to comply with censorship that their Chinese overlords demand) shrank the image of actor John Boyega on posters and other promotional media because he was black.

Conservatives were outraged that when Gina Carano was bullied and threatened online for her right-leaning views only a year earlier, Disney’s response was to fire her, and not come to her defense like they did with Ingram.

And if that wasn’t enough, there was the conclusion of the Johnny Depp–Amber Heard trial.

Amber bear-hugged the Me Too movement at its peak and used the court of popular opinion to attack Depp, but in the end, she lost in a significant way to Depp in a ruling that seemed to reawaken a sense that, occasionally, the court system works.

And now the former poster child for Me Too got to see that the values and loyalties of the leftists are subject to whims and change.

One week of bright spots doesn’t mean that the culture war is over, or that the Right has won, but the reaction from the usual suspects on the Left might leave some with a spring in their step.

You love to see it.
