Now that the illegal alien crisis is out of control, many mayors of so-called sanctuary cities are in a tough spot.
The progressive leaders are now begging for help as resources dwindle at a rapid pace.
And Denver Mayor Mike Johnston left everyone scratching their heads after this statement.
Denver mayor blames Republicans for crisis
Democrat Mayor Mike Johnston is calling for his Denver constituents to make a “shared sacrifice” in light of the illegal alien crisis.
Speaking at a February 9 press conference, Johnston openly said, “This is a plan for shared sacrifice” after already granting aid and support to at least 35,000 illegal aliens in his city.
Rather than calling to stop the flow of illegals into Denver, Johnston decided to turn his attention to the opposing party.
And, even worse than his calls for his constituents to make “sacrifices,” Johnston went on to blame Republicans for the problem his city is facing.
“I’m here to talk a little bit about the devastating impact of the failure of Republican leadership in Congress this week to pass regime change, and the impact that will have on both city budgets and on services that we can provide for newcomers in the city… we will start to have to greenlight a set of hard decisions on budget reductions across the city to meet those costs that we know will continue to arrive,” he said.
According to a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released this month, the Biden administration’s immigration policy has shifted family wages and has moved workplace investments to Wall Street, real estate, coastal states, and government.
The report also found that these resource shifts have moved politicians’ focus away from the needs of communities across America.
For example, 20,000 hospital visits made by illegal aliens caused the partial shutdown of one hospital in Denver last month.
But Johnston refuses to criticize Biden and his administration for the problem, while simultaneously referring to the aliens as “newcomers” or “people.”
In a speech made to Democrat voters on February 7, Johnston said, “Today is the day that residents of Denver should be heartbroken and they should be furious because we know we have a humanitarian crisis in this city trying to welcome newcomers to build a new life… We actually had a bipartisan Senate deal that would have addressed the needs that we have.”
He continued to blame Donald Trump, saying that the former president “intervened with House Republican leadership to kill that bill just so this crisis would continue just because he thinks he has a better chance of reelection.”
A wartime stance
In his speech, Mayor Johnston portrayed the crisis as a wartime scenario, even referring to George Bush and September 11.
He said, “Imagine that, folks, an elected official who has taken the oath of office to protect and serve this country, who intentionally damages the country and hurts cities like ours for their own political gain… It would be like George Bush after 9/11 saying, ‘Maybe I’ll stand down security so we get one more terrorist attack that would then increase my chances of reelection.’”
The leftist mayor also called Republicans’ calls to defend the American border as “cynicism” and “mean-spirited.”
He then said that GOP leaders and Trump had an “intent to make Americans suffer and to make cities struggle” and that it should “disqualify you from ever seeking office in this country.”
Yet it’s not the GOP’s calls for closing the borders that are causing Americans and their cities to suffer — it’s the lax policies of an inept administration that would prefer to boast about “equality” and “inclusion” while allowing anyone and everyone to enter this country without following proper protocols and vetting in the meantime.
