Crime is spiking across the country.
The Left’s answers have been ridiculous policies like “defund the police.”
And one Democrat-run hellscape had an insane response to rising crime that left residents baffled.
San Francisco is one of many cities that is experiencing sharp increases in crime.
The bastion of leftist politics has a George Soros-backed left-wing District Attorney who believes in decreasing incarceration rates no matter the consequences.
One such consequence is that repeat offenders are emboldened to commit more crimes.
And leftists in the city don’t know what to do with two serial bike thieves.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports:
“Mauricio, who asked to be identified only by his first name because he fears retaliation, called the police. Within hours they had apprehended two suspects – Nicholas Tiller and Tyler Howerton . . . [B]oth men had extensive criminal histories: Howerton had been arrested seven times on suspicion of burglary since 2019; Tiller had been arrested 13 times in burglary cases since 2013. Both were on probation at the time they were apprehended. What to do about the two men is a quandary for a city pursuing criminal justice reform while debating how to manage rates of property crime that for years have been among the highest in the nation.”
San Francisco has become a hotbed of burglary because theft under $950 largely goes unprosecuted.
Viral videos of burglars stealing bagfuls of merchandise from stores have shone a light on the crime problem plaguing the city.
Several Walgreens pharmacies have left the city as a result.
One of the absurd “solutions” proposed was to focus on barricading properties to stop criminals from stealing.
The Chronicle continued:
“[R]esidents and city leaders are searching for answers: Should they tolerate a high level of burglaries as a downside of city living, and focus on barricading their homes? Should people who are repeatedly accused of stealing be targeted with rehabilitation services, or incarcerated so they can’t commit more crimes?”
So the burden is on property owners not to get robbed, which is the unfortunate consequence of high-crime areas.
Even some leftists in the city are getting fed up.
City Supervisor Rafael Mandelman pondered:
“It raises tricky questions about incarceration . . . Because so far we’ve been unable to release (Tiller and Howerton) without them committing more crimes. And the question for reformers is, ‘What do we do with someone like that?’”
New York City experimented with soft-on-crime policies in the 1970s and 1980s.
That created the conditions for Republican Rudy Giuliani to win on a law and order platform.
San Francisco is even further Left than New York, but even leftists can only put up with so much lawlessness.
