It was a gruesome scene that left neighbors in an apartment building shocked.
The latest information concerning the attacker should come as no surprise given the seriousness of the crime.
Now an Illinois woman charged with fatally stabbing her boyfriend just got some bad news.
It all started with a 911 call in a small Illinois community.
On the morning of Monday, February 26, police and fire departments responded to a call at an apartment building in the village of Mundelein, a suburb of Chicago.
When they arrived on the scene they made a gruesome discovery.
According to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Manuel Mandujano, the officers encountered a 44-year-old woman called Jeanette Crespo at the front of the apartment building.
Blood-soaked alleged killer: “I’m sorry, he’s over there.”
She was covered in blood.
Officials believe that it was Crespo who called 911.
Mandujano says that she got down on the ground and put her hands out while saying, “I’m sorry, he’s over there.”
A judge has denied pre-trial release to a woman who reportedly told officers "I'm sorry" and that she was going through an "episode" when she allegedly fatally stabbed her boyfriend in Mundelein. https://t.co/UQRapW1vfp

That’s when officers saw an unconscious man, later identified as Michael Murphy, 53, of Mundelein, inside the apartment.
Crespo relayed to officers that it was her boyfriend.
Mandujano said that Murphy’s body was located in between a hallway and a bedroom.
He had been stabbed at least five times, including once through his heart.
He was covered in blood with his shirt taken off and was bleeding from the upper torso.
Paramedics arrived and began performing CPR on Murphy.
Both he and Crespo were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Murphy died shortly after arriving at the hospital, where staff indicated he had suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck area.
Officers confirmed that Crespo and Murphy were the only people in the apartment at the time.
According to Mandujano, Crespo said that she had an “episode” and was “going through an episode.”
She takes medication for anxiety and panic attacks.
According to police records, there have been previous reports of domestic-related calls between the two individuals in recent years.
Crespo now faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder in the case that authorities are still investigating.
After prosecutors petitioned to hold the suspect, Lake County Judge D. Christopher Lombardo granted that request and remanded the suspect to jail
Now, a judge has denied pretrial release to Crespo.
She faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder and the case remains under investigation.
Violent crime concerns on the rise
A recent survey conducted by the polling firm Rasmussen Reports found that a majority of U.S. citizens believe crime is intensifying under President Joe Biden’s presidency as the election approaches.
The poll finds that 61% say that violent crime is getting worse compared to only 13% who say it is getting better, while 24% said the crime problem is staying about the same.
