San Francisco has completely succumbed to violent criminals and drug addicts after decades of Democrat control.
Businesses cannot flee fast enough, costing the state billions in lost tax revenue and thousands of jobs.
But Gavin Newsom was left speechless as another major retail outlet closed its doors.
Macy’s just became the latest retail store to close shop in San Francisco
As a direct result of San Francisco’s out-of-control crime problem, businesses have abandoned the Bay Area.
Almost every week, more businesses both small and large make announcements regarding their departure from San Francisco, devastating its employees and the communities they once served.
On Tuesday, Macy’s became the latest retailer to flee from San Francisco after announcing the closure of 150 stores nationwide, including its massive flagship store in Union Square.
Only a few years ago, Union Square served as a hub for shoppers in the City by the Bay, however after crime exploded following the death of George Floyd in 2020, Union Square has become a ghost town.
Just last year, Nordstrom Rack similarly closed its Union Square location, citing out-of-control retail theft as the primary reason for their departure.
On Tuesday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed spoke to reporters on the matter, saying, “The process to undergo the sale of their building to a new owner with their own vision for this site will take time, and Macy’s will stay open for the foreseeable future and people will remain employed at the store.”
She added, “Macy’s has expressed to me their commitment to remaining a part of Union Square and our City while they undergo this transition. The City will continue to work closely with Macy’s and any potential new owner to ensure this iconic location continues to serve San Francisco for decades to come.”
Macy’s plans to keep the store open until 2025, meaning that shoppers and employees still have another year or so to adjust to this massive closing.
Last September, retail giant Target announced the closure of nine stores across the nation, all of which were in high-crime urban areas, including San Francisco.
Target issued a statement on the matter, claiming, “We cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance.”
Increasing cases of retail theft have cost communities untold billions
As retail theft, sometimes in the form of so-called smash and grab robberies, persists, Americans should expect even more businesses to close down.
Businesses of all sizes cannot keep up with the damage that out-of-control theft has wrought, which has profound ripple effects in the areas they once operated in.
When a store like Macy’s closes down, hundreds of employees lose their jobs in an instant, not to mention all of the suppliers, truckers, and vendors who rely on these stores to make a living for themselves.
