As scrap metal and other materials skyrocket, many have picked up the hobby of magnet fishing.
Magnet fishing entails taking a very powerful industrial magnet, attaching it to a line of rope, and throwing it into a river or embankment with the hope of pulling up valuable metal objects.
Magnet fishing differs from metal detecting because it only attracts magnetic objects, meaning that precious metals like gold and silver stay behind.
A surprising amount of everyday items contain steel, meaning that magnet fishers can pull just about anything up, including guns, car parts, and golf clubs.
However, this magnet fishing couple just pulled up something they will not soon forget.
James Kane and Barbie Agostini, known on YouTube as Let’s Get Magnetic, recently hauled up a mud-covered safe while magnet fishing in an unsuspecting pond in Queens, New York.
After cracking the safe open, the couple discovered stacks of cash worth roughly $100,000.
Upon discovering the safe, Kane and Agostini contacted the New York Police Department to ensure this safe was not part of an ongoing investigation.
Police officers could not determine the owner of the safe or if it had any involvement in a crime, which allowed them to keep the cash inside.
Kane and Agostini spoke out to New York’s Spectrum News NY1 on the matter, with Agostini telling the news outlet that “Once I seen the actual dollars … and the security ribbons, I lost it.”
“I guess the finders keepers rule has worked for us,” Kane added to NY1.
Unfortunately for the couple, many of the bills have deteriorated significantly over the years, rendering many of them unusable.
Some of the craziest things that Kane and Agostini have found include 19th-century guns, WWII-era grenades, purses full of gold, and even a motorcycle.
