The US President may be the most powerful man in the world, but one Mayor is giving Joe Biden a run for his money.
While courts have struck down most of Biden’s mandates as an example of gross government overreach, one Mayor is pushing his luck with a new sweeping mandate.
And it’s ironic, considering that city employees already made a big stink standing up to him this fall.
Apparently, New Yorkers didn’t throw enough garbage into Mayor Bill de Blasio’s yard the past couple of months – because he’s sure not giving up on forcing the jab in the Big Apple.
He’s using the Omicron variant as an excuse to push a citywide mandate requiring all private employers to force their employees to get the COVID-19 vaccination by December 27.
New Yorkers already proved they’re not in a hurry to get pushed around by the big boss when de Blasio tried to force all city employees to get the jab by October 29.
A full 23% of fire and sanitation workers “missed” that deadline while 16% of police didn’t get the jab in time.
And while the city was supposed to put 26,000 employees on unpaid leave the following Monday – based on its own rules – they only sent about 9,000 employees home in the end.
About 12,000 city employees applied for exemptions and were allowed to continue to work while their bosses sorted it all out.
All the same, New Yorkers let their Mayor know how they felt about his crackdown on the city’s most critical service providers.
They held a sort of press conference where they threw bags of garbage into de Blasio’s yard.
About 90% of NYC residents have already been vaccinated with requirements already in place for employees and customers at restaurants with indoor dining, entertainment establishments, and gyms.
So why is he so desperate to crack down on the remaining 10%?
“Omicron is here, and it looks like it’s very transmissible,” de Blasio said in an interview on MSNBC. “The timing is horrible with the winter months.”
But that sounds like a weak excuse for an aggressive government policy.
As of December 4, the World Health Organization announced that the new variant has been detected in 38 different countries with zero deaths reported so far.
