Ron DeSantis has been catching hell from the Democrats.
Democrat governors and their comrades in the media have targeted him as a top villain.
But DeSantis just delivered some bad news that left Kathy Hochul distraught.
If Donald Trump is Public Enemy Number 1 for the Democrat Media Complex, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is Public Enemy Number 1A.
Democrats and the corporate press pretend as if Florida is a dystopian hellscape, yet many prominent Democrats, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), visited Florida during COVID while New York was locked down.
After Ocasio-Cortez was caught maskless at a Florida establishment, DeSantis said during a press conference, “If I had a dollar for every lockdown politician that decided to escape to Florida over the last two years, I’d be a pretty doggone wealthy man…Congresspeople, mayors, governors, you name it.”
Many New Yorkers have followed Ocasio-Cortez’s lead by leaving the Empire State for the Sunshine State.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety, 10,824 New Yorkers have switched their driver’s licenses to Florida in the first three months of 2023 alone.
One talking point from DeSantis critics, including Trump, has been the idea that people were simply moving to Florida because of the weather and the pandemic.
But the trend of New Yorkers and other blue-state refugees heading to Florida has not abated even though the pandemic is over.
Blue state refugees are still flocking to Florida
In the first quarter of 2022, 14,834 New Yorkers fled the northeast for Florida.
People like the weather, but they also like the policies being implemented by DeSantis.
He has taken the lead in fighting against “wokeness” in schools and organizations.
New Yorkers also took to heart Governor Kathy Hochul’s message to leave the state.
Hochul told the Republicans in her state, “Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, okay? You are not New Yorkers.”
Many have taken Hochul up on that offer.
Conversely, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was begging Empire State refugees to come back before he was booted from office over a sex scandal.
Cuomo said at the time, “I literally talk to people all day long who are now in their Hamptons house who also lived here, or in their Hudson Valley house, or in their Connecticut weekend house and I say, ‘You got to come back! We’ll go to dinner! I’ll buy you a drink! Come over, I’ll cook!’”
Unlike Hochul, he was apparently smart enough to realize it wasn’t a good idea to scare away huge swaths of the state’s tax base entirely.
More and more blue state residents are voting with their feet, and they’re voting to head to Ron DeSantis’ state.
