Blind faith to the cause despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary has increasingly been a hallmark of the far-left in recent years.
In the left-wing hive mind, every election loss is the work of voter suppression, failure of every ill-conceived policy is the fault of Republican sabotage, and any opposition to lockstep liberalism must surely be due to racism.
It is this spirit of willful ignorance that has left one far-left Mayor clueless about mask unpopularity in schools.
In the face of overwhelming public pressure, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker announced he is lifting the school mask mandate beginning February 28.
During a press conference, Baker said, “Given the extremely low risk to young people, the widespread availability and the proven effectiveness of vaccines, and the distribution of accurate test protocols, and tests, it’s time to give our kids a sense of normalcy and lift the mask mandate on a statewide basis for schools.”
This move was part of a flurry of flip-flopping among blue state Governors this week after months of obstinate refusal to accept what “The Science” has shown for months.
Masks are essentially useless against the coronavirus and the public has long since moved on.
But scolds at the Boston Public Schools (BPS) are having none of it.
If they can’t have distance learning for decades, then by gum, at least they plan to virtue signal with face cloths in perpetuity.
After Baker’s statement BPS announced, “Boston Public Schools is reviewing today’s announcement from state officials on masking in schools. We remain in close contact with our partners at the Boston Public Health Commission and will continue our masking requirements for students and staff in our schools and on our school buses.”
But the COVID tyrants did get one high profile boost to their cause in Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.
Now, scientific polling from Monmouth recently and probably begrudgingly acknowledges that the vast majority of Americans, fully 70%, agree that COVID is here to stay and we just need to get on with our lives.
And there has been a groundswell among parents all across the country to stop the mask madness in schools.
But Wu, massive evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, preferred a much smaller sample size to bolster her dogmatic opposition to the Governor’s order.
She took to Twitter to make her point, saying, “Tonight I met with 70+ of our most engaged high schoolers in Boston. When asked how many believe we should keep masks on beyond 2/28 in Boston Schools.”

Jeff Jacoby pointed out the fallacy of her argument, saying, “So? If you asked how many of them believe there should be no homework beyond 2/28 you’d get a big show of hands, too. What does that prove?”

But for Wu, and those like her, it’s not about what high schoolers want or what parents want or even about “The Science.”
The tide is clearly turning, but the vanishing number of holdouts act on emotion instead of reason, and that’s always the toughest nut to crack.
