The political science has changed as everyday Americans are over COVID tyranny.
Many Democrats, in the interest of self-preservation, have throttled back on some of their heavy-handed vaccine mandates as they’ve proven to be highly unpopular and of highly questionable effectiveness.
Now NYC Mayor Eric Adams finally dropped his vaccine mandate. But regular people got hit with terrible news.
Adams announced that he is exempting performers and athletes from the city’s private sector vaccine mandate, despite keeping the mandate in place for other private workers.
The Mayor claims that he is simply “leveling the playing field for New Yorkers and supporting local businesses and performance venues across the city.”
Adams said, “Today we take another step in our city’s economic recovery – leveling the playing field for New Yorkers and supporting local businesses and performance venues across the city. By expanding an existing exemption, we are simply making sure the rules apply equally to everyone who is a performer, regardless of where they are from. The old exemption put our sports teams at a self-imposed competitive disadvantage and was unfair to New York performers. Now, with the city in a low-risk environment, we can keep protecting each other, as we continue to move in the right direction and deliver an equitable and inclusive economic recovery.”

This upset a wide range of New Yorkers as this announcement did nothing to address how such a move would support the vast majority of local businesses as other private workers were not granted the same exemption.
The Police Benevolent Association cut to the heart of the matter, saying, “We have been suing the city for months over its arbitrary and capricious vaccine mandate – this is exactly what we are talking about. If the mandate isn’t necessary for famous people, then its not necessary for the cops who are protecting our city in the middle of a crime crisis. While celebrities were in lockdown, New York City police officers were on the street throughout the pandemic, working without adequate PPE and in many cases contracting and recovering from Covid themselves. They don’t need to be treated like second class citizens now.”

Twitter users mocked Adams and the Democrats mercilessly for hypocrisy.
Tom Watson said, “Politically, what a very weird policy for the NYC Mayor to blow so much capital on. Almost all pain, no real gain. Disastrous for vaccine uptake. Unions fuming. Complete abandonment of his whole working-class persona. To help a handful of clueless rich jocks? Pure bizarro world.”

Of course, the backlash to this tone-deaf and bone-headed move is well-deserved.
One thing the last year has shown is that Democrats and hypocrisy go together, like traffic and weather.
