New York City is now seeing the return of a very unwelcome guest

Residents of the Big Apple have had a challenging couple of years.

They’ve dealt with increased crime and dangerous subway attacks and it seems like the hits keep on coming.

Now, New York City is seeing the return of a very unwelcome guest.

It went away for a while but now it’s coming back and it’s causing new concerns.

It appears to have started in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and just in the past couple of months the World Health Organization (WHO) is now sounding the alarm (again) about a “pandemic potential.”

But this time the concern isn’t COVID-19.

Instead, it’s the return of Monkeypox.

At least, that’s what it used to be called – because since the 2022 “Monkeypox Emergency” the disease has since been rebranded as “mpox.”

Another pox on New Yorkers

According to New York’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the number of cases in the city has increased.

The city is now averaging 36 cases per month, and while this number is relatively low it is nonetheless almost double the number of reports during much of 2023.

While most cases in recent months have been mild, at least ten people have required hospitalization.

The Health Department is sounding the alarm about a potential summer surge of cases, similar to that which occurred in 2022.

The infections are said to be associated with sexual activity.

While officials say that “mpox” is not technically a sexually transmitted disease, this may be a matter of semantics because they warn that it is spread by “skin-to-skin contact.”

According to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s latest advisory, “The groups most at risk of contracting the virus, a cousin of smallpox that can cause painful lesions and flu-like symptoms, are among those where the virus first began to spread — men who are intimate with other men. However, it is not a sexually transmitted disease, but one that spreads from skin-to-skin contact.”

Concerns over a new outbreak are mounting

The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) demonstrate why there is a new concern.

There have been 576 reported cases of the disease just since January 1st, compared to 298 for all of last year.

According to the CDC, the virus comes in two variants.

Clade I is more severe while Clade II is associated with milder symptoms.

While to date there haven’t been any cases of the more severe type in the US, an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is causing concerns about a risk of introduction of Clade I.

Clade I is endemic in Central Africa and kills up to 10% of people who get sick, while 99.9 of people survive infection of Clade II.

Treatment and vaccination protocols for both types of the virus are similar.

Some have speculated that the increase in cases might be because of increased sexual contact at University Gaza protests but the CDC denies this.

On the other hand, there’s every reason to believe that cases are more likely to increase given the continuous arrival of unvetted illegal aliens to the city.

In the end, this may prove to be one more headache for New Yorkers on top of a growing number of others since Joe Biden assumed the presidency.
