Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is the queen of arrogance and entitlement.
But the power-hungry Democrat just hit a speed bump.
And she just got caught red-handed cashing in on a massive deal with a billionaire.
Democrats like to pretend they’re all for protecting the little guy, but it turns out it doesn’t take much to buy off Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
And one billionaire is undoubtedly gloating over the deal he just managed to seal with a “donation” that’s a drop in the bucket for him.
Lightfoot uprooted thousands for political benefactor
According to a watchdog group, what was supposed to be a “10-year plan to ‘transform’ public housing citywide and offer a model to other cities’” got nixed in Chicago the moment Lori Lightfoot got a politically appealing offer.
“When thousands of families were forced to move out of the ABLA Homes public housing complex two decades ago, Chicago and federal leaders promised they would be able to come back to new housing and a revitalized community on the city’s Near West Side,” Propublica reported.
Instead those plans, which included building homes for about 30,000 people in America’s third largest city, have been scrapped in favor of leasing the land to a professional soccer team.
A deal was recently inked with the billionaire owner of Chicago’s professional soccer club, the Chicago Fire Football Club, to lease 26 acres of Chicago Housing Authority land to the sports team for the next few decades.
Lightfoot likes soccer fields but really likes campaign cash
The team has plans to build six soccer fields, an indoor training facility, and business offices.
That decision alone was controversial enough, but what happened next has some people in the Windy City on the verge of blowing up.
In the middle of November the billionaire owner of the Chicago Fire just happened to make a $25,000 contribution to Lightfoot’s reelection campaign.
Since that donation came to light its caused an uproar with City Alderman Raymond Lopez calling on the city’s ethics officials to investigate what appears to be a case of “pay-to-play” politics.
“I believe this represents a gross & familiar abuse of power and, at a minimum, a potential violation of the City of Chicago’s Governmental Ethics Ordinance,” Lopez wrote in a letter to the city’s inspector general and the director of the Board of Ethics.
According to Forbes magazine, Morningstar founder Joe Mansueto comes in at #471 in their list of the richest billionaires in the world with a net worth of about $5.4 billion.
Meanwhile, Lightfoot is battling off several contenders for her job as Chicago Mayor.
