All too often justice and right and wrong take a backseat to political concerns.
Now a California girl and the powerful forces she says have her ‘scared for my safety’ suggests it’s even more the case today.
And Justice Thomas will be spitting mad after how leftists defended this attack on a young female student.
A California woman says she has been abandoned by the very same people who constantly talk about women’s rights and empowerment.
The woman says coming forward to her authorities with her story of abuse now has her “scared for my safety,” after the reaction from political allies of the powerful man responsible for it, according to an account recently reported by the Daily Wire.
The young woman – referred only to as Maria – alleged in 2017 that she was assaulted at the hands of a black Santa Barbara teacher named Matef Harmachis, a radical leftist and black nationalist whom she says bit her ear and touched her inappropriately during study hall.
And according to the police he admitted it.
Now, how he is being treated invokes a troubling contrast with how Left-wing activists and politicians treated Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
When President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, Democrats were livid at the prospect of a black justice having a conservative judicial philosophy.
Thomas was almost destroyed during his 1991 confirmation hearings spearheaded by then-Senator Joe Biden.
But he wasn’t about to crumble before the unsubstantiated smears and unproven allegations of sexual harassment Democrats attempted to pin on him.
Thomas railed against Democrat efforts to smear him and ruin his career for daring to not give in on Leftist jurisprudence.
“From my standpoint as a Black American, as far as I am concerned, it is high-tech lynching for uppity Blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that, unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you,” is how Thomas described what was happening to him at the time.
In a 2018 interview, nearly 30 years on from the 1991 fiasco conservative filmmaker Michael Pack pressed Thomas on his thoughts about what Democrats perpetrated in the hearings.
“We know what this is all about. People should just tell the truth: This is the wrong black guy; he has to be destroyed. Just say it. Then now we’re at least honest with each other. The idea was to get rid of me. And then after I was there, it was to undermine me.”
Given this history, Thomas would surely be unsurprised but nonetheless appalled at the completely different treatment a criminally convicted black teacher and Left-wing activist is getting in California.
Where were these Leftists during the “high-tech lynching” of Clarence Thomas?
Harmachis – who had been placed on leave several times by the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) for misconduct – eventually lost his job years after earning a criminal conviction as a result of his attacks on Maria.
The attack in which, according to California’s Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Harmachis “growled in [the student’s] ear like an animal and then bit or nibbled her ear” occurred in May of 2017.
But Harmachis wouldn’t lose his teaching license until 2020.
Despite the conviction, and revocation of his teaching license, Left-wing activists are now attempting to resurrect Harmachis, claiming that the convicted attacker was the real victim.
Earlier this summer, the Santa Barbara Independent published an op-ed by a local activist, Marcelino Sepulveda, that purported to define the facts of the case, arguing that “false allegations of sexual assault by black men have been frequent, persistent, and often violent phenomena.”
That op-ed was just the beginning.
More followed by more rationalizations and support for Harmachis, with one psychologist bemoaning how “legal attacks are a strategy to undermine the work of social justice.”
The victim believes that she’s caught up in an orchestrated smear campaign aiming to salvage the reputation of Ethnic Studies Now, an activist group seeking to integrate ethnic studies into the school curriculum.
She said, “It’s a very tight-knit group dedicated to social justice. Where it goes wrong it’s, we want this by any means necessary. I honestly don’t think it matters if it means inflicting harm on an innocent person. I don’t understand why I have to be vilified so they can feel better about their ideology.”
A betting man might doubt if any of those defending Harmachis – who reportedly not only admitted but was adjudicated and convicted, both criminally and civilly, for assaulting Maria – think Clarence Thomas deserves an apology.
Justice really should be blind but for far too many, especially on the political Left, it seems just the opposite.
That’s a fundamental thing that needs to change for the good of all.
