Democrats can be counted on to fabricate endless heart-wrenching reasons to separate taxpayers from their hard-earned money.
But, more often than not, that money ends up going down the drain thanks to government waste.
And now more is being revealed about how fraudsters pulled a fast one in a blue state leaving taxpayers and hungry children to pay the price.
The Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner is in the hot seat as lawmakers demand to know how she allowed crooked restaurant owners to enrich themselves rather than using taxpayer money to feed poor children during COVID-19 lockdowns.
“I want to be very clear that it was our team’s diligent monitoring that allowed us to identify concerns within the program so quickly in the summer of 2020,” commissioner Heather Mueller said when she was finally forced to speak about the scandal for the first time.
Appearing before the state Senate Education Finance and Policy Committee she also claimed the department isn’t under federal investigation.
But the Republican committee chair wasn’t buying that line.
“If they were successful,” Senator Roger Chamberlain said, “then the FBI would not be involved, correct?”
While the government bureaucrat is trying to downplay her department’s negligence, facts are stubborn things.
FBI warrants that were only unsealed earlier this year show federal investigators believe the non-profit Feeding Our Future, along with several contractors, helped themselves to federal funds earmarked to feed children.
Those involved are accused of using tens of millions of dollars to buy real estate, expensive cars, and pay for trips.
The organization’s executive director and her attorney refused to admit any wrongdoing, but the numbers don’t add up.
Of course, Democrats’ hysterical response to the pandemic opened up government programs to all sorts of fraudulent activity.
Federal pandemic waivers allowed the state Department of Education to skip inspecting food sites in person.
The failure to actually monitor what was happening has made it incredibly difficult for prosecutors to charge those suspected of wrongdoing.
While Democrats are busy congratulating the department for catching the problem so “early,” Republicans remain skeptical considering that the alleged fraudsters managed to spend millions before anyone managed to cut off the flow of cash into their bank accounts.
Feeding our Future was supposed to be serving meals to 5,000 children every day during the summer of 2020.
Among other things, the FBI says some of the money that was supposed to feed children actually went to buy an apartment in Nairobi, Kenya and a commercial building in Minneapolis.
That money was not only frittered away instead of feeding hungry kids, it’s also part of massive government spending that helped fuel inflation.
In turn, skyrocketing food costs have made it more difficult for all low-income and middle-class families to afford healthy meals for their children.
