Crime in Democrat-run cities has spiked in recent years.
The politicians in charge have done little to solve the problem.
Now Mayor Eric Adams faces a shoplifting controversy after he made one stunning admission to business owners.
Republicans did better than expected in New York State in the 2022 Midterms.
Despite Democrats having a massive advantage in registration numbers, Governor Kathy Hochul only narrowly defeated Lee Zeldin, and several Republicans picked up seats in Congress.
One of the reasons why is likely because New Yorkers are sick of the pro-crime policies implemented by the Democrats.
Even former Mayor Bill de Blasio – a Karl Marx-spouting, self-described democratic socialist – was forced to admit that zero bail was a disaster as repeat criminals went back on the streets and reoffended, insisting as early as 2020 that “the bail reform law needs to be amended.” adding “I believe this strongly.”
Current Mayor Eric Adams rose to the office after de Blasio termed out. And he arguably won his race over hard-left challengers largely because of his background as NYPD police chief.
But Adams has not made an impact in public safety.
Big Apple Mayor says private security “a wise strategy” in crime-ridden city
And as crime concerns swell and shoplifting spirals out of control, Adams is encouraging shop owners to hire private security.
Jonathan Lemire of MSNBC asked Adams, “Shop owners are hiring private guards to fight back. Is that a wise strategy? What more can be done here?”
Adams responded, “It is a wise strategy, because I say this over and over again, not only must the numbers reflect safety, but people must feel safe…People must feel safe and we must make sure that businesses are safe in the city and that’s what the NYPD is doing. But we have a real problem with recidivism in the city.”
The liberal trope of poor people stealing bread to eat is not an accurate depiction of what’s happening; shops are being hit with organized retail theft.
Bronx Councilman Oswald Feliz, a Democrat, explained that organized shoplifting is “harming local businesses and local jobs.”
Stores have been forced to shut down as a result.
Feliz added, “A few months ago, American Eagle left Fordham Road, due to constant thefts — 20-plus in one day.”
Over 20 thefts in a day is absolutely ridiculous.
Adams has been hounded by the public safety issue since he was inaugurated.
When Adams first took office, he admitted, “On day one, I took the subway system, I felt unsafe. I saw homeless everywhere. People were yelling on the trains. There was a feeling of disorder. So as we deal with the crime problem, we also have to deal with the fact people feel unsafe.”
If Adams wants to solve the problem, wishful thinking won’t be enough.
