Our immigration system is broken because leftist politicians aren’t enforcing existing laws.
That’s the unfortunate reality and it comes with real-life consequences.
Now, a child-abusing illegal immigrant is back in one blue state and the reason will make your blood boil.
Manuel Zumba-Mejia is a native of Ecuador who was deported from the U.S. in September of 2011 after a conviction for child abuse.
The Westchester County Court convicted Zumba-Mejia of reckless assault causing serious brain injury to his seven-week-old daughter, by shaking and impacting her head.
He was sentenced to three years’ incarceration.
After his conviction and three-year sentence, he returned where he might as well have been welcomed with open arms by the sanctuary state of New York.
In April of 2022, the Croton-on-Hudson Village Court convicted Zumba-Mejia of driving while intoxicated and sentenced him to a conditional discharge and $1,000 fine.
They revoked his driver’s license but released him back into the community with a $1,000 fine even though he is a previously deported illegal alien convicted of child abuse.
To say that he has a checkered history is an understatement.
A “history of violence”
Acting Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) of New York City says, “Manual Zumba-Mejia has a history of violence toward his daughter. He has been removed from the U.S. previously, and he unlawfully returned. ERO New York City will not allow our communities to be safe havens for the world’s criminals; we will continue to work tirelessly to protect the law-abiding residents of New York.”
ICE agents tracked Zumba-Mejia down and arrested him on January 5th.
He is now in U.S. Marshals Service custody while he awaits his trial for illegal re-entry.
According to ICE.gov, “ERO officers make enforcement decisions on a case-by-case basis in a responsible manner, informed by their experience as law enforcement professionals and in a way that best protects against the greatest threats to the homeland. Noncitizens placed into removal proceedings receive their legal due process from federal immigration judges in the immigration courts, which are administered by the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). EOIR is an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice and is separate from the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case. ICE officers carry out the removal decisions made by the federal immigration judges.”
It’s good that this illegal immigrant with a history of violence is in federal custody but the so-called “sanctuary state” policies of the Empire State put the entire population at risk.
Their dogmatic stance could easily have led to the injury or death of another child, pedestrian or motorist given the history of Zumba-Mejia’s actions.
Leftist virtue-signaling has real-world consequences and this is just one more example of why that worldview needs to be rejected.
