If it sounds completely off the wall there’s a strong probability that it’s taking place in the Golden State.
Thousands of former residents have chosen to move elsewhere in the wake of radical policies but those who remain must foot the bill.
Now California death row inmates are wasting taxpayers dollars for one crazy reason.
Every state in the union has its share of incarcerated felons.
Those serving sentences behind bars are often guilty of violent offenses, and while they are entitled by law to humane treatment and adequate nutrition, some of the perks bestowed on this population by the state of California recently have become genuine head scratchers.
Taxpayer funded trans insanity in California
The Washington Free Beacon reports that over the past six years, California tax dollars have been spent on surgical sex changes and cosmetic “gender-affirming” enhancements for 157 inmates, including 4 on death row, to the tune of over $4 million.
This all stems from a 2016 legal settlement by the state with Shiloh Quine, a convicted male murderer with gender dysphoria who is serving a life sentence.
Quine was granted the right to have items typically prohibited to male inmates for security reasons—such as chains, necklaces, and scarves.
The far-Left George Soros-funded Transgender Law Center represented Quine and now those rights extend to other trans-identifying prisoners.
With over $2.5 million having been spent on vaginoplasties and hundreds of thousands of dollars on fake breasts, laser hair removal, and facial feminization the state corrections department says there are no limits on procedures trans-identifying prisoners can request.
Harmeet Dhillon is an attorney who has represented California inmates and says, “People who think they’re transgender have rights, and they should be treated with dignity and respect, but it does not include taxpayer dollars being used to do surgeries that are experimental at best and scientifically unjustified at worst.”
The availability of trans-affiliated medical procedures is markedly different from the rules surrounding such basic concerns as dental care, where root canals on back teeth and cosmetic tooth restoration aren’t covered by the state.
The waste of resources is expanding quickly
Department records show that nearly 1,000 petitions for “gender-affirming” surgeries have already been received.
Demand for the freebies is growing astronomically as well.
The number of California inmates identifying as transgender stood 131 in 2014.
As of last month, the number is now 1,847.
Because of this increased demand and the state’s determination to meet that demand at any cost, prison officials have requested a budget increase of $2.2 million just to cover transgender medical procedures.
That money is expected to be spent on psychiatrists, surgeons, and social workers to deal with the rapidly increasing requests coming from prisoners.
In the end, it’s just one more instance of completely out of whack priorities by far-Left ideologues in the Golden State.
With California already among the most highly-taxed states in the country and one of the least affordable, spending taxpayer money on such unnecessary trivialities ought to be criminal.
If California doesn’t change its ways, the mass exodus will only accelerate.
