It’s another case where far-left governance in deep blue enclaves is utterly failing the local populace.
Crime rates have skyrocketed, the streets are unsafe for families and businesses are engaging in a mass exodus.
Now Brandon Johnson just got raked over the coals by constituents for this tone-deaf new plan.
The city is already a mess and the mayor’s plans add insult to injury
Chicago has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities.
With a crime rate of 33 per one thousand residents, the chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 31.
Multiple shootings and murders occur on a weekly basis in the city and some neighborhoods are reminiscent of a third world country.
The police department has been stretched to the limit with many cops burning out and quitting, leaving for safer communities in the suburbs.
According to the local CBS affiliate, 3,300 officers retired, resigned, were fired – or lost their lives while on duty and the loss of personnel is quickly outpacing the rate of new hires.
Against this backdrop, Chicago’s far-left mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is leaving residents stunned and scratching their heads with his latest plan.
A new report has revealed that the mayor has asked all 50 city council members to help house illegal immigrants in tents.
These new arrivals have been housed in (no joke) police stations across the city and currently number over 1600.
In addition to those essentially squatting at the police stations, the city now shelters 13,000 other immigrants at a cost of $30 million per month.
The massive tents proposed by the mayor are planned to house 1000 people each and include recreational and educational programming.
Johnson said in defense of his plan, “These families are coming to the city of Chicago. If we do not create an infrastructure where we’re able to support and, quite frankly, contain these individuals who have experienced a great deal of harm, individuals who are desperate … that type of desperation will lead to chaos.”
Perhaps the mayor would be better served to take a drive through some of the rougher neighborhoods around town, because the chaos is already there.
Many residents are boiling over the proposal.
Residents: We don’t have the space and we don’t have the means to do this
Alderman Brian Hopkins told Chicago’s ABC-7 TV station, “I’ve looked in my ward. I just don’t have any available space. I have one of the most dense wards in the city.”
Another Alderman, David Moore of the 17th Ward said, “I’m a believer in help your people first, help yourselves first, help your community first. Then reach out and help others.”
Moore is on the right track here.
As officials in sanctuary cities across the country are now finding out the hard way, promises of housing and services only entice more arrivals that each respective city cannot afford.
There’s also the matter that elected leaders’ priority ought to be their own residents, and in this case, Chicago is already in dire straits.
Unless or until political leaders do right by their constituents by enforcing immigration laws and securing our southern border, problems will only continue to worsen at a time so many communities can ill afford them.
