The poisonous enthusiasm surrounding the “Defund the Police” movement galvanized the Left, even as it turned off the rest of the country.
Defunding the police has proved to be a disastrous failure where it’s been tried, with soaring crime rates in countless cities over the past year.
But AOC was furious when her colleague just admitted The Squad’s top priority was a complete failure.
Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA), is the current frontrunner to succeed outgoing Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Though liberal through and through, the Congresswoman who chaired the Congressional Black Caucus during the riots of 2020, issued a “Strategy for Public Safety” that includes a plan to move 250 LAPD officers from desk jobs to patrols, and to hire hundreds of new LAPD personnel.
With the city under curfew during the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020, Garcetti announced that he would cut $150 million from LAPD to redistribute to “communities of color.”
Predictably (at least for most) violent crime in the city skyrocketed and there were several high profile murders.
Bass, acknowledging that the residents of Los Angeles no longer feel safe, announced a plan to rectify the situation, saying, “The LAPD is down hundreds of officers from its authorized force of 9,700. Bass will return the LAPD to its full authorized force.”
In a letter with the public safety plan, Bass continues, “Whether you’ve had your car broken into, your backpack stolen, your property damaged – or you’ve seen news coverage of home robberies, or violent assaults – more and more Angelenos I speak with tell me crime has touched them personally, and they feel scared. That’s not right. All Angelenos deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods.”
Some Democrats like New York Mayor Eric Adams are bowing to reality and rethinking their combative approach to law enforcement.
But not everyone on the left side of the aisle prioritizes deterring crime over other issues they hold dear.
On Tuesday the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to allow the firing of up to 4,000 members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) who have declined to take the COVID-19 vaccine.
And of course The Squad has yet to change course despite mounting evidence of the failure of the “defund” point of view.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has never retracted her position that former Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s proposed $1 billion cut from the police department wasn’t good enough and that “Defunding the police means defunding the police.”
Still, Bass’ plan is welcome news for beleaguered blue state residents.
The front-running candidate for Mayor of the second largest city in the country appears to recognize the value of police protection and allegedly plans, if elected, to reverse Democrats’ failed policies of the past.
Certainly, that would be a step in the right direction.
